It is always hard to spend money.
And in business it is even more important to spend that money wisely!
2025 has certainly already had some excitement! Our new President is working very hard to get our government under control once and for all! And some of the necessary actions required to do that, may not be great for the short term . Tariffs and other tactics to re-instate the USA as the rightful world leader, may mean short lived shortages, or increased costs.
My Grandfather taught me some valuable, life long lessons. Regardless of current situations, certain business thoughts remain the same.
1) The past is the past. It doesn’t matter what you did or didn’t do. It doesn’t matter what the costs were at that time, high or low. That time has passed and have nothing to do with the current time. Let it go.
2) It doesn’t matter what your competition, your family, the news or anything or anyone else is doing. Their situation is not yours. Focus on what you are doing and what you need.
3) Current costs, legislation or regulations and economic conditions rule! Base your decisions on what the current situation is.
If you need to expand to remain competitive, keep up with your obligations or increase your business, do it! If the expansion or additions will meet your needs, there is no reason to delay. No different than any other time, business will continue to go on. This is not to say, wasteful spending to acceptable. It never is. But if your old equipment or fleet is not up to the task, you add to your frustrations and likely customer dissatisfaction.
Next you need to determine if new or used equipment and fleet units are the best choice. The advantage of new is normally some protection of a warranty or guarantee. You need to weigh that benefit against the savings of buying used. If the asset is not used on a daily basis, you may not worry about warranties. If the asset is a large expense, it may be better to overlook a warranty and search for a high quality low usage asset, with much less expense.
In the end, only those businesses who continue to operate can survive any situation. It is up to the business owner to decide if the continuation is a solvent decision.
